Bouncing Cats Movie Screening at National Geographic

The name of the movie is curious enough to make you wonder what in the world it’s about. I’ve been hearing a great deal about Bouncing Cats, so I’ll probably catch it when it screens at National Geographic in Washington, DC next Tuesday November 9. After only a few months on the festival circuit, Bouncing Cats is already an award-winning feature, grabbing trophies at New York’s Urban World Film Festival and Newport Beach Film Festival, and an Audience Favorite Award at Doc Utah. It follows the inspiring story of a young Ugandan B-Boy “Abramz” (Abraham Tekya) and his Breakdance Project Uganda (BPU),

Di’ja Proudly Waves the Flag

If you haven’t already heard of this young pop singer from Canada – by way of Nigeria and Sierra Leone – called Di’ja, well…allow me to tell you! I found her proudly waving the Sierra Leone flag at a performance in Silver Spring, Maryland, as she sang two of her hits: “Rock Steady,” and “Get the Girl.” With two university degrees already under her belt, you can kinda guess she’s well on her way to her goal of being “a very successful West African woman in both academics and entertainment.” I got a chance to chat with Di’ja and her manager backstage after her performance. Found her to be very warm, friendly, determined, and confident. Not surprising, really, considering she’s previously been nominated for Best New Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards (2009).

Preview: International Couture Collections

Wolf versus Goat!?? What the deuce is that, I wondered? Turned out to be the name of the Spring/Summer 2011 collection from designer Mauro Farinelli… the theme being “contemporary prep meets ‘Oliver Twist!'” I didn’t quite know what to expect when DC Fashion Week held a fashion industry networking party at the trendy Tabaq Bistro on historic U Street in Washington, DC. It was a chance for fashion designers, stylists, models, makeup artists and other fashionistas to get together, reconnect, and network with each other. So they held a short fashion show featuring “Wolf Vs. Goat,” (still cracks me up) whose focus, according to the designer, is “simplicity, wearability and attention toeven the smallest of details.” Afrofusion TV’s Khadia chatted with DC Fashion Week Founder and Executive Director Ean Williams, and a young designer from Yemen, about the upcoming International Couture Collections show.
