It certainly feels like an age since I posted here; my apologies. Travel sometimes does that to you. I spent a few days in the UK on my way to Sierra Leone, and as you may know, the internet in Freetown is pretty patchy…. In any case I was invited to a great event by my friend Makeda in London just before I left. It was an event organized by the Black World Cinema Collective and the Legacy Media Institute. Producer, filmmaker and actor Tim Reid, popularly known for his role in the TV series Frank’s Place, was talking extensively about the African Diaspora. Delivering a presentation entitled “Cultural Propaganda for Purpose and Profit,” he asserted that emerging black filmmakers have the advantage of a unique cultural experience in telling their own stories. The Brit Awards, Britain’s equivalent of the US’s Grammy Awards, has a young hip hopper of Nigerian origin leading the pack of nominees. Patrick Okogwu – popularly known as Tinie Tempah, has been nominated in four categories. For Best British Male Solo artist he’s in rather prestigious company, with Robert Plant and Paul Weller also making the cut. He’s also in contention for British Album of the Year, Best British Single (for “Pass Out”) and Best British Breakthrough Act.

Who is Ozwald Boateng? You can soon find out thanks to a documentary film coming out about his life and work, scheduled to debut worldwide at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival on October 20. Born in London to Ghanaian parents, the Savile Row bespoke couturier’s suits have been sported by the likes of Jamie Foxx, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Don Cheadle, et al.
