A Conversation with “An African City” actress Esosa E.

April 21, 2014 § 2 Comments

Ghanaian Restaurant and bar Bukom Cafe was perhaps the apt setting for a recent interview we did with actress Esosa E., one of the stars and producers of a new web series An African City. The gorgeous Ivy Leaguer, also a model, writer, director, and radio show host joined us at the Washington, DC joint – a staple in the Adams Morgan neighborhood for decades – to discuss her role in the popular series set and shot in Accra, Ghana. Created by Nicole Armateifio, a Ghanaian American with a background in International Development and Communications, the series follows five successful African women who return to Ghana after living in the west, seeking primarily a rich and rewarding love life. It’s

a colorful examination of the trials and circumstances that returnees have to cope with in a place they have longed for, and now finally have a chance to call home. Featuring opulent African fashions from the likes of Ghanaian fashion house Christie Brown, the show sets out to challenge the dominant narrative of the African woman that has pervaded the western media. But, as Esosa tells us, very few of the story lines are made up. Regardless of the obvious influence of a certain “Sex and the City” TV series, Nicole herself is a returnee, as was Executive Producer Millie Monyo (who spent a year in Accra but returned to New York). Their experiences, as well as others they know, inform much of the content of “An African City.” And judging by the responses on social media and other fora, scores of African diaspora returnees can also relate. For Esosa, shooting the episodes in Accra allowed her a more wholesome insight into the returnee experience. But her own previous work as an actress, especially in a few short films that she directed herself, meant she was ready for the initially challenging role she was asked to inhabit. Do check out our interview with this dynamic actress, above. You can watch An African City on their website or their YouTube Channel. Esosa is very active on the social media scene; look for her on Facebook and Twitter.  Bless…
