Nollywood Renaissance: “New Nigeria Cinema” comes to DC!
November 23, 2010 § 1 Comment
If you watch a lot of African movies, some of these names would probably be familiar to you: Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Genevieve Nnaji, Van Vicker, Jackie Appiah. Well, a few of these stars are currently in DC for the premiere of a new Nollywood production, “Crazy in Love,” which stars Jim Iyke and Liberian actress Danieline Moore. The producers are planning a major red carpet movie premiere on December 4, 2010, with a host of movie stars from both Nollywood and Hollywood! The movie is directed by Martin Gbados and will no doubt capitalize on the new buzz being generated by Nollywood filmmaking.
Already producing around 200 films a month which are the most popular in Africa at the moment, the Nigerian film industry has been gaining ground rapidly behind India’s, commonly known as Bollywood, to claim the top spot as the world’s largest film producer. Several young Nigerian film directors and producers are eager to move beyond the B-movie status the country’s films are generally stuck with, and are upping the game in terms of budget size and production value. Other countries aiming for similar progress are taking notice; Brazil has reportedly expressed interest in working with Nigerian directors and producers. There is also a new movement to squash the bootleg trade in Nollywood films in New York that has been depriving movie producers of thousands of dollars. Nollywood Actress Genevieve Nnaji has been on the Oprah show, and will be featured tonight on CNN International’s “Connect the World,” (whose transcript you can read here in case you miss it.) If it is true that the more you keep at something, the better at it you become, then all’s good and positive for Nigerian filmmaking in the coming years, for sure! Watch out for more on Afrofusion Lounge about this grand red carpet event on December 4; it will be held at the Rendezvous Banquet Hall in Beltsville, Maryland, at 8pm.
