Perhaps Jimmy Cliff‘s performance of his hit song “I Can See Clearly Now” at the end of the Ms. ECOWAS Peace Pageant should have given the audience an indication of the slant his closing remarks would take. The reggae superstar took on a serious tone as he delivered a call to Sierra Leoneans to “never let foreigners come in and take what is yours.” He had made similar comments on

his stop-over in Ghana while on his way to Freetown, advising West African governments to resist all forms of foreign influence and stay true to their culture. Jimmy Cliff’s solemn admonition belied the energy and excitement that he brought to the Miatta Conference Center in Freetown. His live show was certainly the highlight of the event, but it was also an unforgettable evening of African fashion, beauty, music, and culture. Thirty pageant contestants from 15 ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) countries were judged not only on beauty and brains, but on the

peace message that each was required to deliver that night, and also the quality of their interactions with fellow contestants during the week. 21 year-old Ghanaian contestant Shirley Nwangere, a medical student specializing in optometry, was crowned Ms. ECOWAS 2010. Senegalese student Matel Sow, aged 18, was 1st runner-up and Sierra Leone’s Margaret Murray, a 22 year-old university student, was 2nd runner-up. A correction to my earlier post on this event: Senegalese star Youssou N’Dour could not, in fact, make the event. But as Jimmy Cliff rocked through hits like “Many Rivers to Cross,” “You Can Get it if you Really Want,” Reggae Night,” and “Hot Shot,” I bet the absence of Mr. N’Dour was the furthest thing from the minds of fans. Afrofusion TV was honored to chat with Jimmy Cliff after the event, and we’ll be sure to bring that to you soonest! In the meantime, you can check out more pictures from the event in the Photo Gallery. Bless…
