The Live Sound of Shabaka
September 28, 2010 § 1 Comment
Surely one of the top dance floor fillers of the 1980s, Freddy Cole Shabaka’s “Dem Nor Wan Dance” was deliriously delivered live by this celebrated Sierra Leonean artist for the first time in years last Saturday. The event was a pageant for Ms. Sierra Leone USA 2010, now held biennially, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Shabaka’s music has always had that rootsy consciousness, and the newer songs he performed that night left no doubt that his art and heart still share the same space.
But I can assure you that it was hard for those cocktail dressed ladies and three-piece suit clad gents to keep still in their VIP seats as “Goombay Jamming,” his other dance classic, followed immediately after “Dem Nor Wan Dance!” It will surely be an honor and a pleasure for Afrofusion TV to feature the artist and his music in an upcoming show. From my college days to now, “Dem Nor Wan Dance” has always been Freddy Cole’s shining contribution to the pantheon of quality Sierra Leone music. It is only fitting that we make sure the younger generation appreciate the ones who walked the path before. So look out for Afrofusion TV’s feature of Shabaka, coming soon! You can find out more about Shabaka and his music here. For now, dig this quick clip from the show. Bless…
