17 Year-Old Ivorian Designer Debuts at DC Fashion Week
September 27, 2010 § 2 Comments
A bridal dress made up entirely of cake (YES!) was making its way from the
kitchen to the hallway at the French Embassy in Georgetown, Washington, DC, and the chefs were doing their best to make sure it didn’t tip over. Which provided a throng of photographers and cameramen enough time to take multiple shots of this almost 5-foot plus creation. But for fashionistas attending DC Fashion Week‘s International Couture Collection, it was the runway that mattered most. One of the first collections featured creations from a 17 year-old designer from the Ivory Coast.
Alex Zohore is DC based, and brand new on the fashion scene. He had a pair of tie dye pants on a female model and another pair of pants featuring African print on another male model. His collection varied, with evening and casual looks aplenty. The second part of the show featured, among others, Guyanese designer DonJ’ Moda. Making her second appearance at DC Fashion Week, she told
Afrofusion TV that many of her designs are inspired by her West Indian and African roots. Many other local designers were featured, including Heydari, and newcomer Top Rank Fashions (whose founder Mohammed Numan can be seen in a clip in a previous post). Cynthia Eilen from Miami, Florida was also making her second appearance at DC Fashion Week. More photos from the International Couture Collection are in the Photo Gallery.
